Laos, officially known as the Lao People's Democratic Republic - it is an entirely landlocked country located in the center of Indochina and shares borders with Thailand, Cambodia, China, Myanmar and Vietnam.

Laos is an independent country in the heart of Indochina, bordered by China to the North, Myanmar to the Northwest, Thailand to the West, Vietnam to the East, and Cambodia to the South.

Laos has a total area of 236,800 Km and most of the Landscapes are mountains and forests. The major river is the Mekong River which flows through 1865 Km of Laos's territory and formed the major portion of borders with Thailand or about 1,500 Km. Laos has a population of about 5,433,000. There are about 23 people per Km but are comprised with more than 47 main ethnic groups such as: the Hmong, Khmu, Yao, AKha, Ikor, Leu, etc. These ethnic groups still retain their own distinctive customs, dialects, and traditional. Infact, Laos's population are classified into three main groups:

  • Lao Lum (Lao loeland, live mostly in the plain next to the Mekong River and its subsidiaries).
  • Lao Theung (Lao upland, live mostly in the plateaus).
  • Lao Soung (Lao highland, live generally on top of the mountains.

The easiest way to reach Laos is by air, but it is also accessible by road. The official gates for disembarkation by air are Vientiane and LuangPrabang. The border check points by land are:

  • From Chiang Khong (Thailand) to Heunisay, Bokeo Province.
  • From Nongkhai (Thailand) to Vientiane by the Friendship Bridge.
  • From Mukdahan (Thailand) via Chongmek Vang Tao to Pakse (Champasack Province)
  • From Yunan (South China) via Bohan-Boten to Luangnamtha
  • From Vinh (Vietnam) via Keo Neua-Lak Xao (Bolikhamsay Province)
  • From Quangtri (Vietnam) via Lao Bao-Den Savanh (Savannakhet Province)
